Well, the title may catch your eye. You are probably used to taking a plastic straw from the drinks stall, sticking it in your drink and walking away. However, do you know just how much trouble these straws are causing to wildlife and the environment?
OK, so you throw a used plastic straw into the bin. It goes to the landfill. Then, the wind carries it into the sea. Guess what happens next?

Now, do you know how much trouble plastic straws are causing to marine wildlife?
Plastic straws take a looooong time to decompose (approx. 200 years). This causes a lot of pollution! After hearing all of this, do you dare to use plastic straws ever again?
Thankfully, there are ways to fix this without getting rid of straws completely. Bamboo and metal are all better alternatives of straw materials than plastic. Why bamboo, you may ask? Well, even though it is hard to get bamboo to grow, it grows very fast when the shoot comes out, the growth rate shooting up to 36 inches in 24 hours at max! However, you may want to go for metal instead as bamboo is quite expensive (SGD $18.36 for 10 on Amazon including delivery charges).
I hope you have learnt something new today about how plastic straws are affecting marine wildlife and the environment. Please help to spread awareness on this with your family members and friends as that will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
